This is one of the original general utility PEMF
systems, from Germany over 20 years ago.
It
allows for settings useful for people with significant
sensitivities. It has multiple components for various
ranges of applications. It can be used for health
maintenance and treatment for specific health
conditions. The mattress pad is wide and long enough. It
doesn’t allow for simultaneous use of the pillow and pad
applicators. The mobile unit is very useful for travel
purposes. It also has a feedback capability, giving
suggestions for the optimal settings. This unit can be
applied as an applicator along with an attachment, such
as a pad, pillow or pen. The pad is wider than a
recliner chair. |

A
durable, very useful, good strength, cost-effective
whole body PEMF system; allows for use of two
applicators simultaneously. Does have a very narrow
pen-like field applicator. I use this system extensively
in my practice. It is a very useful system for the cost.
I find it useful across a range of applications,
including health maintenance, by allowing for whole body
and local applications. Being a sinusoidal field it is
typical of sinusoidal fields in that it is quite
dynamic.
This
has not been a problem in my hands in causing
aggravations. When I suspect an individual is highly
sensitive, I will use the QRS product instead. The pad
is short and narrow, allowing for use on lounge/recliner
chairs. The shortness is not too much of a problem,
since the pillow can used for the head area. It’s
generally not a problem to have the feet dangling over
anyway. If they need specific treatment the pillow can
be used there instead. I find the brain level
frequencies to be a significant and unique feature of
this whole body system.

Research: |
None published, on this
specific system and signal, since it is a newly
introduced system. A stress study, that I helped
conduct, indicates that this system causes a significant
increase in tissue oxygen (pulse oximetry) concentration
compared to a relaxation control group. |

The
EarthPulse device is a handy system that is unique in
how long it can be set to run.

It is
especially useful for helping with sleep. It can
“entrain” or “capture” the brain wave frequencies to
induce sleep and then, because it can run for hours (up
to 12 hrs), it can keep the brain at low frequencies
throughout the night so early wakening is less likely to
happen. To help with sleep, either place the device
between the box spring and mattress for a gentle
entrainment or under the pillow for a much stronger
entrainment.
Because
it can run unattended for long periods of time it can be
especially useful for local injuries or tissue repair,
for example, fractures, burns, sprains and strains,
rashes, TMJ, carpal tunnel, tendinitis, etc, where you
may want to use it for 1-2 hrs at a time. It is really
more locally useful vs a whole body magnetic system,
which often prefer, because of the size of the coil
(about 3 inches wide).
It gets
hot after awhile if kept in an enclosed space, like
under a mattress or pillow. It doesn’t get hot enough to
be dangerous. The program controls are simple to use and
it is very rugged. One does need to watch out to not
bend the lead wire going into the coil too much because
it will stress it. While, the manufacturer uses north vs
south conventions for some of the applications, it is
not really well established that these make a
difference. The user will need to experiment on his/her
own to see whether they make any difference.
As with
any PEMF system, it can be used with pets and horses in
similar fashions to human applications.

Applicator: |
Modular electromagnetic coil allows 3 different
intensities (air core, solid core and casing) and two
different types of field. |
|
Controls: |
5
program modes: Sleep, Alert, Recover, Entrain-Up,
Entrain-Down;
q
Sleep –
ramps frequencies down and back up, from 10Hz to 0.5 Hz
then back to 14Hz, with most of the programmed time
between 0.5-4 Hz; variable time up to 12 hrs.
q
Alert –
12-14 Hz, to drive low Beta brain wave alertness levels.
Higher Hz levels may cause a sense of anxiousness;
variable time up to 12 hrs. (Could be used in the work
setting, especially when people feel a mid-day slump or
for studying in the evening or early morning).
q
Recover
– is used for pain and injury/tissue damage recovery;
9-10Hz – alpha range; use the metallic casing around the
coil core to create a deeper field and steeper field
gradients, which are often found to enhance pain
reduction, healing and repair; can be used for up 8 hrs.
May be used without the casing too and wrapped around
the body part needing help. Especially helpful for
athletic performance enhancement – causing relaxation
first and then raising brain activity to alert
functioning levels.
q
Entrain-Up - ramps frequencies down first and then back
up, from 10Hz to 0.5 Hz then back to 15Hz; for 30, 45 or
60 minutes; use air core only
q
Entrain-Down - ramps frequencies down from 10Hz to 0.5
Hz; for 60 minutes only; use the air core.
More specific instructions are given in the manual.
|
|
Field Intensity: |
Three output intensities 0.5 - 2 Gauss upon surface of
the mattress, ie, at the skin surface, if placed under a
mattress (depends on mattress thickness). Direct
application to the skin with the casing on, gives up to
180 Gauss with the Recovery mode. |
|
Frequencies: |
Based
on the 5 program Modes, very tight range of frequencies
all below 15 Hz.
|
|
Waveform: |
DC
Square wave |
|
Power Supply: |
100-220 volt AC; may be used with a battery or car
lighter outlet. |
|
Time Control: |
Timer adjusts in 15 minute increments up to 12 hours, by
using the up or down arrow buttons. |

Their web site contains links to relevant PEMF study
abstracts at the National Library of Medicine. The
manufacturer has 1000's of anecdotal reports from
satisfied customers that affirm results for various
health issues. Two unpublished pilot studies from the
Yale-New Haven Hospital Pain Program found effects upon
sleep and pain reduction in chronic low back pain. Check
the EarthPulse website for video showing beneficial
effects upon Parkinson's disease sufferers. |

Cranio-electrical
Stimulator (CES) |

I use the LISS machine to treat:
q
depression,
q
acute and
chronic pain,
q
fibromyalgia,
q
stress,
q
insomnia,
q
spasticity
q
headache
and
q
to
increase attention, concentration, alertness and improve
cognitive acuity
While other treatments, especially with medications, are
used for therapy for the above conditions, I find that
this system, is a one-time purchase, non-toxic,
non-invasive alternative. Medications will usually not
simultaneously elevate endorphins and melatonin while
reducing pain and stress. Because of enhancement of DHEA
it is an effective anti-aging device. On top of all
that, it is very simple and easy to use.
The LISS Cranial Electrical Stimulator (CES) is a
specialized form of TENS (transcutaneous electrical
nerve stimulator) that is safe to use over the skull to
treat the brain. I use it for a number of different
situations. It is FDA approved and may require a
prescription. Dr. Pawluk can provide these
prescriptions.
The
neurochemicals it has been found to change are:
q
increased
o
serotonin (to a level similar to SSRIs like, Prozac) –
good for depression,
o
ACTH –
brain anti-inflammatory action
o
Melatonin – facilitates sleep and circadian rhythms
o
Beta
endorphins – the brain’s natural pain killers
o
Enkephalins – similar to endorphins in action
o
GABA –
a major inhibitory brain neurotransmitter
o
DHEA –
anti-aging and the downstream production of other
hormones
q
decreased:
o
cortisol – reduces the damage from stress in the body
It uses
a 15,000-Hz carrier wave and modulated waveforms of 15
and 500 Hz, first of positive and then of negative
polarity. The design of the signal causes more of a
capacitance build up and discharge of the electrical
charge compared to other TENS and CES devices that are
more electrically stimulating. Non capacitance type CES
units tend to create a much stronger than necessary
electrical charge (which can be over stimulating).
The
energy content of the positive and negative signals are
comparable. It is a 4.5-inches long, 2.66-inches wide,
and 1.0-inches high black box with 2 electrode ports. It
has 2 cables and 2 (2 inch) round electrodes that hold
thin foam pads. Electrode conducting gels are not
required. Water moistened round sponges are placed
between the electrodes and the application site which
are held in place by a Velcro band. The machine turns
itself off automatically after the usual 20 mins of
stimulation. It uses a 9 volt battery for its power,
making it very portable.
During
use, the electrodes are typically placed back of the
temples just in front of the upper part of the ears.
Individuals might or might not initially feel a tingling
sensation. Stimulation can be set just below the level
at which it might generate a tingling sensation. When
turned on, and active wet contact is made, the "on"
light shows how strong the contact is and how strong the
signal is by activating a series of small lights on the
end of the unit. The stronger the stimulus the more
lights are on.
Typical
treatment sessions are 20 minutes and may be done
several times a day, although most people will need only
1 or 2 treatments per day.

This is a basic PEMF system
that has several programmable single frequencies, with
large and heavy applicators. Intensities can be very
high, ranging from
…..,
and treatment duration settings from 10 mins to 2 hours.
The big advantage of this system is the intensity levels
that can be generated. The downside of delivering these
intensities is that the applicators have to be bulky.
Because of this the applicators are more limited. This
system is more intended for serious local problems,
where whole body health maintenance is a lesser
objective. This system would be very useful for spinal,
pelvic, hip or other complex fractures, for deep wounds
and for spinal/spinal stenosis/arthritis. Basically, it
is very good for local problems. I own one of these and
because I test many systems, I will use it over other
systems for when my back and foot arthritis really acts
up. It could be very good for local tumors or abdominal
problems too. When you get this system, you sacrifice
whole body health maintenance. I figure, if you pay a
lot of money for a magnetic system, what can you get out
of it lifelong. As a physician, I like to combine as
many purposes as possible, accepting all the trade-offs. |

This
is a handy little system that is intended for local use,
particularly for problems deeper in the body. As with
all local systems, it has systemic effects through
reflex or generalizing mechanisms. The paddle gets very
warm to hot. I would use a layer of cloth or towel on
the skin to avoid a burn. The strength of this field is
enormous and would go through the body easily. At 9
inches away from the coil it is still producing about 8
gauss. The major advantages of this system are its field
strength, the heat it produces and its partial
portability. The primary disadvantage is the lack of
frequency adjustment. The price is reasonable and it is
very sturdy. The people who make and distribute it are
very good to work with.
