TREATMENT BASICS Sensitivity

Dealing with sensitivity is a delicate and complex matter. It would usually be better to have a consultation and evaluation to get a better sense of the circumstances and history of the individual and to develop a plan. This way users would be more likely to keep a system and try to work through the sensitivity. If they are sensitive to a magnetic therapy (MT) system, they are probably quite ill in other ways. Approaches to dealing with these are very individualistic and are hard to generalize. The general rule in sensitivity is to GO SLOW AND GO LOW.

Sensitivity is usually due to 2 factors – enhanced psychological sensitivity to the stimulation of the sensors in the skin especially and/or hyper-reactivity of response systems due to toxicity of the nervous or metabolic systems to magnetic field exposure. Usually people have a combination of factors. The former is often helped by awareness, education and reassurance. The latter can only be helped with detox. Treating toxicities is paramount as a component of managing the whole person, even with MT’s (magnetic therapies). Sensitivities can range from very mild to very severe. Knowing where they are in this range will greatly guide the approach to take.

The first goal in sensitivity is to decrease the amount of field exposure.  You can control duration, total area of exposure and/or location of exposure and intensity, and sometimes the frequency or frequencies. Reduction of any one of these may help. All we can do is reduce/eliminate one at a time to find which one/ones work/s for a given person at a given. Treatment is usually a “moving target” since the treatment continually changes the body’s processes and often needs to be adjusted as the therapeutic changes – usually for the better – occur. This is akin to peeling the layers of the onion. In homeopathy terms, it is called Hering’s Law.

If the sensitivity is severe, reduce all 3 parameters (area, duration or intensity) and see if that helps. First, establish the settings (usually duration and level) at which the sensitivity began, if it occurred only after the treatment had been happening for some time. You can try to go back to settings that worked before sensitivity reactions started. Continue the treatment at that prior level until the body feels comfortable. It may never feel comfortable going any higher. If the person becomes comfortable again at a previous level, stay at that level for at least a week and then gradually build back up again. Go slow and low in people with sensitivity. Go very slow - a minimum of one level, frequency or intensity of only one variable every week.

In some people, intensity is important. In others, duration is more important. In others, limiting how much of the body is exposed (area) is more important. In others, selecting other parts of the body to treat is more important, that is, remote to the problem area – up higher in the body or lower in the body. From an acupuncture perspective – Above the problem in the front and lower than the problem in the back. In some people, the program settings or frequencies may be more important. Knowing the programs in the system is critical. Some programs can normally be very sedatingor even over-sedating. Some may be over-stimulating, and depend on the cause of the sensitivity.

Limiting exposure to other non-ionizing radiation exposures at the time of treatment would help too. Examples are, sitting close to TVs (within 15 feet), sitting in front of computer monitors for hours, fluorescent lighting, noise vibrations (including some kinds of music), UV exposure (sunlight) of uncovered skin, using other electric devices such as hair dryers, heating blankets, cell phones without hands-free accessories/adapters, microwaves, photocopiers, and many workplace electric equipment devices, etc. These appliance or equipment sources are a set-up to experiencing sensitivity with MT systems. Some occupations may set-up people for over-exposure and sensitivity, that is, the work acts as a primer to increase sensitivity to other exposure sources.

The use of any therapeutic system requires the confidence that comes from experience.  Every application of MT is an experiment since the outcome is not guaranteed.  Still, some kinds of prediction are possible or should be considered when certain individuals are seen.

Determining sensitivity to magnetic fields

You will probably be sensitive to magnetic fields if you have any of the following:

bullet exquisitely sensitive to medications, so that can't tolerate any medications and/or are allergic to a wide range of substances -- whether foods, medications or environmental conditions, including severe seasonal allergy - or multiple chemical sensitivity.
bulletsensitive to other electrical fields, such as computer terminals, televisions, cell phones or other electronic equipment.
bulletsignificantly depleted energetically, with recent prolonged hospital stay, protein depletion, adrenal insufficiency, on many medications, extensive infections or sepsis, or multiple trauma.
bullethealers are very sensitive to energy fields.
bulletknown significant environmental toxicity, including but not limited to heavy metal poisoning, such as Mercury sensitivity, and multiple chemical sensitivities.
bulletvery anxious, nervous or worrier, dependent personality or very psychologically sensitive.
bulletexcessive "hot" problems, such as extensive skin inflammation, infection, hives or urticaria, or high fevers, ie don’t like to be touched, or severe auto-immune conditions.
bulletextremely-heightened nervous system sensitivity, such as manic or hypomanic condition, active mental instability or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)/Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

In any of the above categories, the MT system should be used at the lowest setting over several weeks, to allow the body to acclimate.  Treatments should be limited to at most eight minutes twice a day.  If over several weeks there are no reactions to this level one can gradually increase the setting or the time of exposure by one increment per week.  In addition, it may be of value to use the lowest setting with the smallest area of exposure, eg a pillow applicator vs. a mattress-type applicator.  A mattress-type applicator provides a whole body treatment that can be excessively stimulating for those listed above.  A smaller area of coverage is less likely to produce an over-reactive response.

In addition to the above procedures, water can be magnetically treated by putting a container of water on the magnetic applicator, for any amount time. Drinking this water throughout the day helps sensitive people acclimate to magnetic fields especially pulsed magnetic fields.

Other detox treatment may be needed prior to MT if the reaction to the MT is more severe.  Also, since PEMFs stimulate the body’s anti-oxidant systems, adding or pre-treating with anti-oxidants before a course of MT starts may help significantly, that is, loading or saturating the body with anti-oxidants. This may include but not be limited to high dose Vitamin C (2-4 grams/day) plus grape seed extract at 500 milligrams twice per day, melatonin 3-12 mgs per day, a bioflavonoid complex, alpha lipoic acid, fish oils, etc. Magnesium, calcium and potassium supplements are also needed until the tissue is back in balance. A really good multi-vitamin is basic and probably necessary for treatment to be most effective.

Another option is to consult with a homeopath and describe the sensations experienced during MT. There may be a specific remedy to use or optionally a remedy to help treat the underlying sensitivity issue in general.

Since sensitivity often requires MT expertise to best manage and optimize MT results, individual consultations may be needed. Also, having optimal tissue health and the necessary tissue building blocks is important to get the best healing results. We work with all these issues to make sure your magnetic systems give you the best results. People often stop using their magnetic systems, purchased on their own or through the recommendations of non-experts, because they are not getting the best results or are having side effects. There are few experts in giving proper guidance. (See how to get a consultation– under Contact Us)

Getting over-stimulated

It is very difficult to know how long to use a magnetic system for or how strong it can or should be. Sometimes there is research to guide us and this could be followed. The duration of treatment with PEMFs is usually more of an issue than with SMFs because PEMFs often require one to be somewhat tied down to the where the PEMF system is. SMFs are usually very portable and so can be worn for hours or even days at a time. SMFs are more likely to worn too long. Let the body tell you when it’s had enough. Take a break every day from SMFs. More may not be better.
